How to plan an Elopement in Alberta
Are you dreaming of an intimate celebration, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and the love of your life? Perhaps you are feeling the desire to go the non traditional route and plan a day that’s truly unique to you? Planning an elopement is an opportunity to plan YOUR perfect day to say "I do." in a way that is meaningful to you both. Below is a comprehensive guide to planning the Alberta elopement of your dreams.
Create a vision board
This one is pretty self explanatory, but if you don’t know where to start - try a vision board! What does a perfect day look like to you? Your partner? Creating a vision board can help you draw visual inspiration for an overall vibe, theme, and even get some activity or location ideas!
Date and location
Next up, it is probably easier to start with location first. After your vision board, were there landscape or location themes? Whether it's a secluded beach, a mountaintop, or a vibey city, choose a location that speaks to your hearts and sets the scene for your special day (not that you always have to be limited to just one, either ;)). Once the general location or area is narrowed down, consider what time of year you prefer and whether you want to elope in a picturesque destination or somewhere meaningful to you as a couple. Many elopement photographers (like myself) can help you narrow these down as we are experts in our areas.
Determine a budget
You can do this at any stage, but I think dreaming is more fun first, then time to narrow in. Consider expenses such as travel, accommodations, permits (if necessary), attire, photography, and any additional services you may require. Being clear about your budget from the outset will help you make informed decisions and avoid any financial stress down the line. The best thing about elopements is you can truly spend your money on what matters most. Want to book a helicopter? Have a photo and video team? Because you are saving on many other items vs a traditional wedding, it really opens your horizons.
Book your photographer
Your elopement photographer (and videographer if you wish) will capture the magic and emotion of your day, preserving memories that you'll cherish for a lifetime. Now we may be bias here, but because elopements are usually either only 2 people or even a smaller group, documenting and having those memories is truly important. Take the time to research photographers and videographers whose style resonates with you and fits within your budget. Many (like us) also have free consultations - scheduling consultations or virtual meetings help to discuss your vision and planning needs. Now, elopements can often be a bit more flexible from a photographers standpoint, but they (we) usually book out fairly early out so that’s why I would recommend booking as soon as you know you want to elope!
Book other vendors
While your elopement may be intimate, you may still require additional vendors to bring your vision to life. This could include a florist for your bouquet and any decor, a hair and makeup artist to help you look and feel your best, and of course a videographer to document your day. I would also recommend booking these vendors as you start to narrow down your general plans to ensure availability.
Accommodations and activities
If you are planning to get away and plan some activities, I would look into these shortly after finalizing a date. Being a photo video team servicing Banff / Canmore / Jasper and we see how quickly things can book up especially in destination hot spots.
Legal things
Before you elope, be sure to research the legal requirements for marriage in your chosen location. This may include obtaining a marriage license, adhering to any waiting periods, or fulfilling specific documentation requirements. Depending on where you plan to elope, you may need to enlist the services of an officiant as well. If you are unsure, oftentimes your photographer can assist in pointing you in the right direction for this. Many couples also opt in for symbolic ceremonies if they are travelling, so this is always an option and just as special as well. Here is a link to Alberta regulations: Getting Married in Alberta
Small details
As you get all the larger items completed, and as your day draws closer - consider personal touches such as writing your own vows, selecting meaningful music, or incorporating elements that reflect your personalities and love story. These details will add depth and significance to your ceremony, creating memories that you'll treasure forever.
