When to Elope in Banff

If you are in the planning stages of your elopement or micro-wedding, particularily in Canada and Alberta- A big question comes up of WHEN to elope and get married. Of course, there are many logistical factors that go into planning an elopement but with having an intimate ceremony, it opens up the location and timing for you. There is no “perfect” time to elope or get married - but I have put some things in this post to guide your thinking!

Every season has its pro’s and con’s here in Alberta- and it truly comes down to what you value and the type of experience you’d like to have. If your elopement is going to be mostly outdoors, seasonality is a big factor to look at which will help your planning.

If you’re looking for tips on choosing locations specifically you can view our blog on choosing a location here

Seasons in Alberta:

Winter

  • Winter is extremely beautiful. The snow leaves a blanket of magical and whimsy to your day.

  • Winter can also get extremely cold here (Late Dec-Feb the coldest). Other safety factors include limited day light, driving conditions, and access consideration to locations.

Spring

  • Weather starts warming, some trails and locations still have snow. Generally less people.

  • Weather can be unpredictable, good to be flexible or prepared for that with backup plans.

Summer

  • It can get pretty hot depending on where you are eloping, and it can be a bit busier with tourists and visitors.

  • Longer daylight - good for hiking and camping wedding adventures.

  • If you want lakes, some lower lakes open in late spring but many not until Summer

Fall

  • Beautiful larches and fall colours can create a movie like scene. Larch season can be busy however.

  • Weather can be unpredictable (again, in any season really!). It can get quite cold at night as well.

Sunrise/Sunset times (Based on Banff):

Winter: around 830 am / 4:30 pm

Spring: around 7:15 am/ 8:15pm

Summer: around 5:45am/9:50pm

Fall: around 7:45 am/ 7:20pm

Other Timing Items to Consider:

  • Weekday vs weekend

  • Dates that have sentimental value

  • Travel involved

  • Aesthetic : What type of landscape features are you looking for?

  • Accessibility + Adventure

  • Sunrise/Sunset/Multiday

  • Permits/Restrictions

While I know this may feel like a lot to consider, I would recommend slowly breaking your values down and the big vision for your day. Your day will be unique to you and your partner and that’s a darn beautiful thing! Take your time, and don’t be afraid to ask your vendors questions.
