Top 3 Tips to Choose a Perfect Photoshoot Location

So- You are either looking to do a photoshoot or you just booked in one (woohoo!). There is lots to think about for a photoshoot, and location is one of the most important factors to help set the overall tone.

I have provided my top tips in helping to narrow down a photoshoot location. Don’t be shy to ask your photographer however! As a photographer I am always helping and guiding my clients through locations based on their preferences and some of the reflections below. We are here to help!

Tip 1: Overall Feeling and Meaning

Do you have a “vibe” or “feeling” you are going for? Dreamy in the forest, high up in the mountains, natural, dramatic, etc? This can help start to pinpoint your location (or ask your photographer to help!). Would you like a place that has meaning to you, or is the aesthetic more important? Both are great, but writing this down will help guide you into more specific locations.

  • Colours: Are you looking for greenery, winter whites, an aesthetic building? If you are going for a specific colour palette than can also help narrow your location.

  • Pinterest or photographer samples can be a good place to get an overall idea - Pinterest is great for making mood boards!

Tip 2:Access/Difficulty

Some places are harder to access than others. Are you looking for an adventure, or would you prefer to do as little walking as possible? Speaking from experience there are beautiful locations for each- but it’s something to keep in mind. Easier/popular locations can sometimes have more people, but your photographer can position you in a way where that doesn’t show, or go at a quieter time if this is important to you.

  • Rules: Depending on the location (indoors or outdoors) some places require permits. Be sure to check in with the location or ask your photographer for guidance as this can be a potential added fee or place boundaries around shooting times.

Tip 3: Season

Thinking of an overview of season can help you nail down what kind of look you are going for and what to prepare for. For example, winter is gorgeous to photograph in but especially if you are in Canada can be cold (and the exact opposite for summer!). Depending on the time of year will absolutely affect the colours and overall look to the shoot. Seasons also affect the time of day to organize the photoshoot for the best lighting. Seasons can have an effect on temperature, colours, light, and weather - so this is something to talk about with your photographer.

Other:

A location doesn’t have to appear spectacular to be a great backdrop. Simple backdrops can also be beautiful and be dressed up with props.

Weather can always be a concern so be sure to talk to your photographer about that. I photograph rain or shine, some of the most beautiful photoshoots happen in typically '“unideal” weather!

Location isn’t everything, and your photographer will make any place you choose look amazing.

I hope these tips for finding a location for your next photoshoot get you thinking. As a photographer I can always help guide you and suggest places for you as well. Have fun!
