How to plan the best surprise proposal in Banff National Park

Planning to say “I do?” Maybe in beautiful Banff or one of the surrounding Alberta parks? As a Banff photographer who has photographed many proposals in different ways, I am here to help share my top tips! Luckily, there are many incredible locations here and you’ll have stunning photos that you will always remember.

1. Choose the Perfect Location

You can either pick a spot based on a meaningful and photogenic spot, or maybe even both! Whether it’s a scenic overlook, a park, hike, or a favourite date location. It would be helpful to scout the location beforehand to find the best angles - this can be coordinated with photographers help. Choosing a meaningful location for your proposal can add a special touch to the moment, but it can also happen in a city or National Park you’ve never been before that will now hold this special memory for you. Take into consideration if your partner would rather have this moment shared with other people around or as private as possible as that will play a major part when it’s time to choose the location and time it will happen. Again, if you hire a photographer experienced in the area they can provide suggestions based on these ideas.
If you are thinking of doing your proposal in Banff, Canmore, Kananaskis, Jasper and you would like me to be your photographer, all of my packages include consultation and help deciding the best location, timing, etc!!

2. Plan how you want it Documented

Certain times of day will make your photos look different, will effect the people there, etc. I have shot proposals in Banff during many different hours and all have their unique strengths, so it’s also what works logistics wise.

3. Coordinate the Details

There are many ways to go about the actual proposal from a photographic standpoint. If you want something more planned, a photoshoot, or truly secret- let me or your photographer know in advance so we can plan accordingly. Timing, cues, location, and details are all important prep work we do before hand. Also, feel free to include any small details that may make the day even more special (their favourite memories, snacks, music, anything!)
